White Christmas!

Ever since we moved to Texas I have always said, "I want snow once a year on Christmas and then never again!" I love mild winters and Texas has been good that way. Our first year in Texas it snowed but it was in march or april and the snow never really stuck to the ground. Well, last night the girls went outside to sprinkle the reindeer food and we found snow covering the ground. I was like a kid in her first candy store. I went wild! I was jumping up and down screaming. The snow stayed until Christmas and then melted. The girls got to make snow balls and believe me, they had a blast! It was such a wonderful Christmas Eve. We gathered together and each child said one thing they remember about the story of the Savior's birth. I loved hearing the things they remembered.

It was FREEZING outside but the girls wouldn't come inside. They loved every minute.

Christmas morning.
I realized that Josh and I are the only adults in any pictures. Josh and Carol are together. Zeb and I are together. Enough said! ;)

Last year for Christmas the girls asked for American girl dolls. It was a tall order and not even Santa and the parents together could manage it. So the girls got baby alive dolls and were super excited and grateful. They stuck to their desire for an american girl doll again this year and Santa and the parents came through. They were in heaven. I scored some AWESOME deals at a garage sale in Utah that Angie went to for me AND Zeb's coworker, Susan, also has a daughter that donated unwanted outfits and accessories for the girls. So not only did the girls get dolls from Santa but they got about 6 outfits and lots of accessories from mom and dad! In the girls' words, "This is the best Christmas EVER!"

Isn't Julia getting so big?

It being the first Christmas away from our families, I braved all the Christmas traditions and am making Christmas dinner. Breadsticks, jello, celery, salami and all. Growing up my mom made the BEST salami ever (I don't personally like any other salami) and my mom told me I could totally make it. "It's fool proof," were her words. So right now my house has the wonderful salami aroma that I have grown to love at Christmas time. Throw in some Judd's and Amy Grant Christmas songs and I feel as "at home" as I can feel. I love the traditions that we are doing with our girls and I love the happiness and love that fills our home. I miss my family but I am so happy with all of our wonderful blessings.
I am Thankful for a wonderful family.
Thankful for an amazing husband.
Thankful for 4 beautiful gifts from my Heavenly Father.
Thankful for a great job and our first home.
Thankful for all our family and friends, near and far.
Thankful for family in Texas to share Christmas with.
Thankful for IChat so we can still see our parents and family that are away.
Thankful for the feeling of Christmas.
Thankful for the sights and sounds of Christmas at my home this year.
Thankful for the gospel and for my Savior. His birth and ultimate sacrifice.
Thankful for an eternal marriage.

Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!
Love to you all,

The Traveling Turkey

Carol and I cooked our first turkey together and and it was delicious! I have to say I was very proud when we sat down to eat dinner at 1:04 and we had said we wanted to eat at 1:00. Not bad!!!! It was so great to spend the holiday with Josh and Carol and the kids. We filled the time with bike rides, crafts, stories and great food! We started a tradition this year called the traveling turkey, which we pass back and forth. The girls write the menu down, clip it on the turkey, and we use it as our centerpiece. They LOVED the idea. As Josh and Carol were leaving Cora said, "What about the turkey!" Good memory, Cora!

On our bike ride we went to a small lake that is near our house. I love having a bike trail 20 feet from our front door. The girls live it too!

The kids have so much fun in the bike trailers.

Julia loves to ride on my back and I find her leaning her head on the back of my neck as we go. It's hilarious.

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I can't believe I am just posting this and it's Christmas next week. On second thought, I guess I CAN believe it. ;)

Bedrooms for the Girls

Claire and Audrey share a bedroom. Since I am one of  "those" moms that is paranoid about kids falling off bunk beds and breaking their arms, we have the beds side by side. I am super excited to decorate the rest of the room but for now we have the wall colors and bedspreads...so I didn't take pictures of the other walls. I had so much fun with the teal wall!!!

Hallie and Julia share a room and I had lots of fun picking the Roxy theme for this one. Rather than buying another bed Hallie sleeps in the bed we use for our guests and it seems to be working great. The wall above her is the bright pink and the other three walls are light pink.

Julia's crib is in the corner of the room and you can see the pink that is on the rest of the walls here. I LOVE the colors and can't wait to decorate this room too!

Finally!

I thought I would post pictures of the kitchen first. I love my kitchen. I really like the color of the countertops and am happy the "mistake" turned out so well. I am officially a loser for taking so long! Sorry!

To Come...

I have been chastised about the absence of house pictures and promise to post this week. Until then you can enjoy this story of Audrey.

During Sacrament meeting today Zeb was going out with Julia. Audrey had mentioned she needed to go potty so Zeb told me to have her go with him. I leaned over and said, "Audrey are you going to go potty with Daddy?" She said, "yes," and then loudly informed me (and all around us), "I'm going to go poo."
The people in front of us looked at each other and started laughing. I leaned forward and said, "Sorry for that."
First week since we've moved in to the new ward. Niiiice.

Sunday Baking

After bath time the girls really wanted to bake some brownies for our Sunday night baking together. With the pans packed for our move on Tuesday I sent the girls over to the neighbor's house to borrow a 9 x 13 pan. While they were gone I decided to start the brownies. I went to grab the eggs.....

and this is what I found!

I LOVE IT! I'm assuming Audrey's doing.
Claire came back with an 8 x 8 pan saying it was the smallest she had. Knowing we needed 9 x 13 I asked her what size she asked for and she said, "3 x 5!" Needless to say, they had to go back to ask for a bigger pan and 2 eggs,

...in the Texas rain of course!

What we're up to...

Zeb and the oldest 3 went to Home Depot this morning and made a project together. They had a great time and Claire told me all about how she got to hammer the nails herself. Audrey kept talking about her "project." Next time they get the little orange aprons. The loved every minute with their Dad.

Julia is rolling like crazy. She talks up a storm and has started scooting. My little baby is getting so big. It makes me so sad. I cherish every minute. She is such a sweet and happy baby.

I have really started packing and have made a lot of progress. It makes me really happy to think we will be in our own place AND that we will stay put for a while. At least that's the plan. :) In a week we will be home owners. Still isn't real.

Silly Girls

When Audrey really needs a drink of water she says, "I'm soaking thirsty!"
A change from when she used to say, "I'm starving thirsty."

Apparently Hallie gets chased a lot at recess from the boys in her class so the other day when Zeb came home from work she said, "Did the girls chase you?" His co-workers got a kick out of that one. As did I. I love it when your kids make you laugh.

Hallie was singing she'll be comin round the mountain and this was how her version went, "She'll be riding six flat horses when she comes..."

Claire was signing along to the song "Bleeding in love." Only she was singing "I just keep feeding in love."

I love my silly girls.

Consumer Update

Hello everyone!

It's been a while since my last consumer incident; I guess I've been fortunate for the past several months. However, the folks at Direct Star TV (a DirectTV reseller) decided to help me get back on track. Or should I say derail me from the track.

To begin, I'll admit that I haven't always been a BYU fan, but lets just say being away from Utah tends to put a new spin on things. The Texans I've met are pretty committed to their alma mater; it's practically religion. In any event, I had recently been contemplating getting satellite in order to get the games and the BYU channel. Keep in mind that Leah and I have been married now for almost 10 years and the only time we had cable TV was when it was included in the price of our apartment - a grand total of one year and three months, and for the first year of our marriage we didn't even own a TV. It would be safe to say that we don't like spending money on television service. All that aside, I decided to call Dstar to find out exactly how much it was going to be for this new service.

A young man named PJ answered the phone and we began our conversation. He asked for my name and I told him, "Zeb." To which he replied, "Ed?" To which I responed, "No, Zeb. Z-E-B." Then PJ said, "Oh... Zed," and then went off about some friend of his from high school that loved Led Zeppelin, so they called him Zed and how it was so cool, and blah blah blah... I didn't want to be anal, but I figured if I was going to buy service from them I wanted my name to be right on the bill so that I wasn't getting crazy things for people named "Ceb" (I know, I know, you don't believe it could happen - see earlier posts).

After getting the name right, I told PJ that all I wanted was to find out prices and that after we determined the cost I would discuss it with my wife and make a decision. PJ said that was fine and that we could just schedule a follow up call. So we went on our merry way determining exactly what the price would be. I will admit, I was less than excited about the price. After all, I only wanted three channels and you have to buy a billion channels you don't want just to get the ones you do want. So PJ did what any eager telephone call center salesman would do, he offered me discounts, and on we went widdling down the price of the service. After about 35 minutes on the phone we determined what the final price would be. With the price settled, PJ gave me a customer service number and read me some legal disclosure jargon, which seemed odd to me since I wasn't planning on buying anything at the time. And then, not surprisingly, PJ asked for my credit card number. After declining to offer the number, PJ informed me that nothing would be charged to the card, but that after I gave him the card number he would be able to give me an account number and we would be able to set up a time for an installer to come out to the house. Hmmm... that's odd. Despite the fact that no immediate charge was going to be made, this seemed a lot like purchasing the service.

So I backed PJ down and asked him to schedule the follow up call that we'd talked about. He told me that he wasn't able to schedule the call without setting up the account, and to do that he'd need the card number. This seemed fishy so I pressed a little. PJ then informed me that the card number was needed to verify my ID. Yeah! Sure PJ. In an act that was probably more deserving than was called for, I asked one more time for the follow up call. Finally, PJ relented and he said he'd set it up.

The phone went dead for a moment and then suddenly PJ's manager was on the phone. This seemed kind of odd since managers usually get on the phone for customer complaints, but I went along with it. The manager started asking me some pretty direct questions. "What seems to be the problem," he said. Mind you the manager had a pretty thick hispanic accent, which I thought was pretty entertaining. Imagine Jack Black in Nacho Libre. "We're giving you all these great deals and you're not signing up." I started to tell Nach... I mean, the manager that I wanted to talk to my wife before I committed to anything. But he cut me off and told me that they had offered me every discount they could. I told him that was fine, but I still wanted to talk to my wife. And of course he told me that they could only offer these discounts to callers the first time they called in. As if they keep a data base of all callers and once a caller hangs up without purchasing they're treated like leapers and charged some exorbitant fee because they didn't take the offer the first time and now they were being punished. So I told the manager that if they wouldn't offer me those prices again I'd just call another reseller and get the same deal. Of course he told me that I couldn't get this deal anywhere else and I told him there were at least nine more hits on the Google search that would give me the exact same price. To which he quickly replied that I wouldn't be getting their superior service. That actually made me laugh out loud. Here I was on the phone with a "Manager" of this company and he was giving me the riot act about not signing up for their their service. So I asked him if this was the way they treated all their customers. To which he promptly replied, "You're not a customer yet!" Now that was really laughable. So then this pip squeak says to me, "Why don't you talk to the person in your home that makes the decisions, and call us back when you're ready to get the service." Tisk, tisk, tisk Nacho.

So I went to Dstar's website and did a little research. It turns out that they advertise themselves as being members of the Better Business Bureau, and that they have an A+ customer rating. I thought it would be easy enough to go ahead and file a complaint while I was online to see if we couldn't adjust the rating a bit. But, as it turns out, the BBB has no record of Dstar. Odd, an A+ rating from a company that doesn't even have a record that you exist. Well that got the old law school consumer protection outline flowing through my head. It seems to me that someone is advertising their services as having a particular sponsorship or approval that it doesn't actually have. That just so happens to be a laundry list violation of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act. It looks like I'll be making a few phone calls on Monday... (stay tuned)

Audrey's Turn...

Some moms from the ward here in Garland were putting together a joy school and we jumped at the chance to join. Almost every day since school started for the older girls Audrey has asked when her school was. "When do I go to school?" "When do I meet my teacher?" Well, her first day is finally here.

She of course gave Julia and me hugs and kisses 30 minutes before Emily came to pick her up. The time finally came and I could hardly get her to stand still to get a picture.

I know she is the same age as she was yesterday but she looks so old to me in these pictures.

I am so excited for you, Audrey. I hope you have a wonderful day at school. You really are a big girl. You're my best Audrey in the whole wide world. Love you, pumpkin!

One down...

When I got off the plane this was the toothless grin I received! I was so excited for her.
She pulled out her first tooth while she was at school when it was hanging by one root. Her friend said, "You can just pull it out." So she did.
She saved it for me to see and the night I got home the tooth fairy came. I love this new smile.
Let's see how long it takes for the other 2 that are loose to come out.

Big Wheels Keep on Turnin'

Things are moving along well. The stone and brick are up on the outside of the house, the sheetrock is up inside and the mudding has begun. I was actually at the house with the girls when the mudders put on their stilts to start taping the ceiling. They thought it was pretty awesome that these guys were so high they could touch the ceiling.

To those of you who don't know, Leah is in Utah, so she's missed out on this. I hope I didn't ruin the surprise.

Off to School!

I can't believe today is the first day of school. Claire and Hallie were both really excited but they both said they were a little scared. This morning started with Hallie having a dream she was peeing and woke up wet and Claire got a bloody nose. Baths for both!
We got out the door only about 8 minutes behind schedule. Not too bad...
I dropped Claire off first. She was super excited.

Audrey on the other hand cried her eyes out. She misses her sisters SOOOO much.

She looks so old to me. I love her more than I can say and am sad to be away from her all day again. I love you, Claire.

Audrey insisted on walking Hallie to school. She wanted to go with her so bad. Hallie was so sweet with her.

I was worried Hallie would cling to me and cry but she did great. The teachers helper came to her side and helped her find her cubbie. Way to be brave, Hallie!

I love you, Hallie! You are sooo special to me and I will miss you tons and tons!

We left the house this morning at 7:26.
Got to Claire's school at 7:56.
Got to Hallie's school at 8:10.
Got home at 8:49.
Left to pick Halie up at 10:26.
Got Hallie at 11:00.
Got home at 11:30.
Left to pick up Claire at 2:30.
Got Claire at 3:10.
Got home at 3:40.
Total time driving and waiting in pick up lines: 217 minutes; 3 hours 37 minutes.
Yeah, October isn't going to come fast enough! ;)

When I picked up Hallie she gave me a BIG hug! The first thing she said was, "Thanks for the card, Mom." I asked her what her favorite part of the day was thinking she would say, "playing on the playground, eating snacks, hanging my backpack in the cubby, or drawing." But her response was, "Getting a note from you." How precious is that? She didn't even know what it said, she just loved that it was pretty and was from me. As we got home she said, "I can't wait to go to school tomorrow." I said, "Hallie I'm so happy!!!" And she says from the other room, "I get to wear another outfit." Spoken like a true girl.

Claire had a great first day as well and talked about meeting new friends. I knew she would but as a mom you worry like crazy about stuff like that. Her favorite part of the day was lunch. She told me that was when she got my note. I didn't realize just how much they love getting notes from me so I will definitely be doing that more often!!!
